In order to increase Google AdSense revenue, site owners must be familiar with which factors increase ad clicks and how to improve those conditions on their own websites.

Google AdSense is a program that allows the owner of a website to earn revenue from ads placed on his or her site. When an individual viewing the page clicks on the ads, the site owner will receive a percentage of the money the advertisers pay to Google for ad placement.

Provide Relevant Content to Encourage Ad Clicks

Providing relevant content is not about catering to every possible topic. On the contrary, relevant content stays within its niche and evaluates all aspects of the topic. This could be through a variety of interconnected pages or, if the topic is very narrow, one very thorough page of information.

A web page with thorough information on a subject will encourage internet users who are searching for that topic to remain on that page to read more. Relevant content includes the use of spelling and grammatical checkers, since individuals are more likely to browse away from a page if they question its credibility.

Relevant content also should contain plenty of keywords that pertain directly or indirectly to the niche. These keywords will allow Google to index the website appropriately for more users to find. The goal is to use content to encourage relevant browsing, rather than individuals who stumble upon a page by accident. These individuals are less likely to click on ads.

Ad Placement Affects Google AdSense Clicks

Ad placement has a substantial effect on ad visibility and whether or not internet users click on ads. In an experiment conducted by Eyetrack, the company discovered that individuals are far more likely to click on ads that appear on the top half of a page rather than those that appear closer to the bottom. The reason? Few users will read through an entire web page and learn more. They will skim the content and click away. The goal, of course, is to have users opt to click away using ads.

Placing ads on the right side of a page is another good option to encourage clicks and increase Google AdSense revenue. Most consumers are right handed and of those that are not, the majority still opt to use a mouse on the right side of the keyboard. This results in the cursor being directly positioned over AdSense ads when the site loads.

Ad visibility is key. Some methods of increasing the visibility of ads are:

  • Provide pictures around or in between ads. Pictures automatically draw the eye and users who look at the pictures are more likely to also look at the ads.
  • Use the same colors for an ad scheme as the rest of the website. Rather than setting ads apart, integrate them. Most consumers don’t like ads, but will glance at links.
  • Place ads in one spot. Ads that are spread out across the page destroy symmetry and will cause individuals to leave the website.

Work to Increase Google Ranking

Appropriate use of keywords will promote a website’s rank with Google. High ranked sites appear in the index before sites with a lower ranking. This increases the traffic to a website. Increased traffic often results in increased ad sense earnings. Website back links are also useful in improving Google ranking and increasing earnings.
